The leather trench coat (also commonly called a leather duster or an ankle length leather jacket) descends from the heavy coats worn by US Soldiers in the American Civil War (Union frock coat). The leather trench coat was created by various manufacturers submitting designs for various armies.
The veterans returning to civilian life naturally kept their leather trench coats which became highly fashionable for both men and women. Towards World War II, the leather trench coat unfortunately became part and parcel with apparel of the German military. Nevertheless, it WAS utilized by many military services of the Allied Powers as well. In particular, a more modern style of the leather trench coat, which became the leather duster.
Leather trench coats are usually heavily-buttoned, double-breasted long coat made with cowhide, buffalo leather or sheep/goat napa leather. Some recent leather trench coats, more commonly called "long leather jackets", have no belts, rings, or epaulets, and only two pockets on either side. This type is really just an ankle length leather jacket.
It has recently become highly fashionable with Keanu Reeve's use of this style of jacket in the Matrix serios of movies
